Sweet to Mild Pepper Plant Varieties for 2014

These are the different varieties that we have planted for this season.
Because they grow or don't grow at different rates, availability will vary from week to week.
If you are interested in a certain variety, please let us know and we will make every effort to get you one.
Most of the photographs and information came from the seed provider. My personal comments will be in purple.
All are Heirloom varieties.

Sweet to Mild Peppers

Quadrato D'Asti Giallo Pepper

Picture
The giant yellow Quadrato bell pepper. The huge fruit are a favorite here. The largest variety we have grown, beautiful and blocky, with very thick walls; the flavor is outstanding--sweet and rich! This Italian variety gives very heavy yields; one of the best varieties for marketing. This superb pepper is a real winner!

Tennessee Cheese

Picture
An ancient heirloom recovered from seeds donated by a couple living in Kingston, Tennessee. Originally from Spain, where it is still used as a staple in many dishes. Fruits are perhaps the best we've seen for stuffing. Round, apple or tomato-shaped, with a flattened base and a thick, delicious skin. Use it fresh like a bell, pickled, canned, or dried for paprika!

Lipstick Pimento

Picture
Finding a good thick-walled Pepper for the Bay Area has always been a challenge, but like ‘Gypsy’, ‘Lipstick’ has found a following with both home gardeners & many famous Californian chefs. At 2” wide & 4” long, the pimento style peppers are like shiny red cones & they are produced early & in abundance. The walls are thick with deep red flesh, making the peppers outstanding roasted, peeled & stuffed. If you prefer them green, they are ready after 53 days, or red at 73 days. Grow in full sun & space the plants 12-16” apart.

Poblano/Ancho (when dried)

Picture
HEIRLOOM This is the primary Poblano-type pepper. It is nearly the size of a regular bell pepper but flattened and pointed at the end. It is an attractive shiny green with a thick flesh which makes it ideal for stuffing. Its pungency is generally quite mild and it is used green although it will eventually redden.

Sweet Banana

Picture
HEIRLOOM from Hungary. Produces 6 inch long, Hungarian-type peppers abundantly, sometimes over 20 per plant. The attractive yellow color eventually turns crimson and the flavor is sweet and spicy.

Pepperoncini

Picture
The popular little, thin, pickling pepper. 3-5-inch fruit have a superb flavor and just a little heat. Small plants. This heirloom comes from southern Italy.
