South Carolina Sunday Mornings
First printed in 2006, South Carolina Sunday Mornings was a year long family project. Every Sunday morning for the entire year, mom, dad and myself went outside and explored the artistry of nature. I took multiple pictures of the beauty surrounding us. Together we decided on a picture of the week and at the end of the year I assembled the photos together with favorite poems, songs and quotes.

The People's Pride - Chapter 1
Abby stood alone in the shadows, downwind of the Nukpana Mukki. The rancid stench of decay made her eyes water and stomach lurch, but right now she couldn’t chance them smelling her so she stayed where she was. Her eyes followed a very young female. The girl couldn’t have been more than three or four in human years. She had a ragged baby doll cradled protectively in her arms. Abby studied her as she sat down and rocked the doll gently. Her once blond hair was caked with dirt and hung limply over her face. The dress she wore was ripped and stained, barely covering the torn and rotting flesh. The other Nukpana Mukki ignored this one. She was different somehow. More human.
If this one had a nurturing instinct, maybe there really was hope for all of them, thought Abby as she moved forward slowly. Trying to get close without the girl catching her scent. Maybe if she was careful enough, she could make friends with the young thing. The girl hadn’t seen her yet. So far so good. Abby inched forward again. Another few steps and she’d be in her sight.
The girl set the baby doll down on the ground. Just like a mother putting her infant to bed. She tenderly stroked the doll. Then bent her head down as if to kiss the baby goodnight. Abby held her breath.
The girl opened her mouth. Let out a bansheelike scream. And tore the head off the doll with her sharp teeth. She turned towards Abby and stood up.
The wails grew louder as she ran towards her. Abby unloaded her weapon into the little one’s chest and head. She fell to the ground with the body of the beheaded doll still clutched in her hands.
She grabbed another clip of ammo from her belt and snapped it into her weapon. Firing as she went, Abby backed quickly towards the gate. She opened it up, slid through and locked it before they caught up to her. She stood a moment longer, watching from a safe distance. The Nukpana Mukki raged against the fence, clawing at the chain links. Skin peeling away against the metal. At that moment Abby lost all hope for the Nukpana Mukki.
